So hey guys, this one is actually Mary Roach's book "Spook" repackaged and retitled and resold, so if you've read that then you've read this. Luckily I wasn't one of the tons of people who were fooled into buying another copy. Man that would suck. People on Amazon are NOT happy.
In this book Mary Roach looks at what happens after we die using a fun down-to-earth-yet-scientific approach. She looks into things like out-of-body experiences, reincarnation, what gives us "creepy" feelings in dark corners and whether or not we can actually communicate with the spirit world. And more!
I enjoyed this book but was also super not into it. It's well-written, hilarious at points, very interesting and pretty weird. Buuuuut I was looking forward to escaping into something at the end of the day, not ... ugh ... LEARNING. haha just kidding. I think I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to really experience this book.
All in all I'd give it a 7/10 and yes I'd recommend it to someone science minded and very interested in learning real facts and reading funny anecdotes about the way people think about ghosts and life after death.
******** SPOILER ALERT ********
The chapter on ectoplasm was especially mindblowing. Basically it was about how mediums back in the early days of photography would fake "ectoplasm" by unspooling long reels of fabric or gauze. And then saying "hey a ghost left that there". They'd smuggle it in their clothing, vaginas or stomachs, then produce or regurgitate long reams of fabric after turning out the lights, and sometimes take photos to prove ghosts are real. So. Bizarre.I did an image search and was not disappointed.
These are the actual photos that fooled people. Okay then.
